Shore to Shore to set mark — again
MANSON — The Lake Chelan Shore to Shore Marathon, Half-Marathon and 10K will again have a record turnout at this year’s Sept. 7 event.
Registration has already eclipsed last year’s final total and the event is still four weeks out. A year ago, 35 percent of the participants signed up in the last month.
The event’s all-time turnout mark was set last year when 400 runners signed up.
“We couldn’t be happier,” said Joel Rhyner, race director of the event, which is presented by the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce. “When we took over management of the race in 2011 we had about 220 people participate. We have witnessed excellent growth since then.”
Through July 28, sign-up numbers for all three races are on pace to break last year’s figures, Rhyner said.
That includes the 26.2-mile marathon race, which typically attracts the fewest number of runners. Rhyner believes at least some of the increased interest in due to the fact the Lake Chelan Marathon is the last 2014 Boston Marathon qualifier in the Pacific Northwest this fall. Following last April’s horrific bombings, Boston Marathon organizers are anticipating record turnout next year as runners return to pay tribute to the victims. In order to participate at Boston, runners need a qualifying time.
Rhyner said the Lake Chelan Marathon will give away a free round-trip airline ticket to one lucky person who qualifies for Boston at its Sept. 7 race. The airline ticket will be good from anywhere in the United States. Anyone who earns a Boston qualifying time at the Lake Chelan run will be entered into the drawing and eligible for the prize. If only one person qualifies for Boston, then that person automatically is the prize winner. The airfare giveaway is being sponsored by Devil’s Gulch Drinkery and its owner Troy Lindsey.
Proceeds from Shore to Shore help benefit several local organizations, including the Chelan High School Wrestling Program, the Manson High School Cross-Country Team, and the local chapter of Girls on the Run.
Businesses and service groups interested in setting up food or informational booths at the Manson finish area should contact Deb Miller at firstname.lastname@example.org.
“It’s a community event. We involve the Chelan community. We involve the Manson community,” Rhyner said.
All three races feature point-to-point courses, with participants being bused from Manson out to the starting points. The marathon begins just past Fields Point Landing on the lake’s south shore, the half-marathon starts near Karma Vineyards on the south shore, and the 10K begins at the Chelan Shores Development on the north shore. All three races end on Pedoi Street adjacent to Manson Bay Park.
In addition to being presented by the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce, the event is sponsored by Vin du Lac Winery, Devil’s Gulch Drinkery, North Cascades National Bank, SET Coaching, Cashmere Valley Bank, Icicle Broadcasting, Mill Bay Casino, Project Groundwork, Crunch-Pak, and the Eugene Marathon.
